“It’s actually unbelievable how one small icon can contain so much information and deliver it immediately. It’s really powerful! People have been using icons to express themselves and communicate with others from the very beginning of the human kind. Cave paintings, Egyptian hieroglyphs are nothing else but icons. Some of which you can understand even today.” Justas Galaburda in the book Icon Design Guide. Students create a custom set of 12 icons that complements the needs and feel of any project. They establish a theme of their interest, iterate on initial sketches, and polish a complete icon set that’s perfect for clients, colleagues, or personal work. When done, all icons are uploaded to the Noun Project in their positive versions (one color) and the set is exemplified through digital mock-ups and presented in class. This project allows students to strengthen their skills in observation, design, abstraction, building an aesthetic, and designing icons that match their creative vision.
